Countdown to EHDS compliance

Executive summary

At the 2025 European Health Data & Innovation Summit in Warsaw, experts warned that many EU hospitals risk falling behind in preparing for the European Health Data Space (EHDS). Our Chief Scientific Officer, Timo Kanninen, joined the discussions, highlighting how our EHDS-ready Trusted Research Environments (TREs) can help institutions accelerate compliance, streamline data access, and future-proof their digital infrastructures.

Key insights

  • BC Platforms contributes directly to TEHDAS2, developing universal guidelines and enabling cross-border research through secure TRE technology.
  • EU hospitals must act now to meet EHDS compliance by 2028; readiness timelines are already accelerating.
  • Finland and France currently lead EHDS implementation, but hospitals lag behind university centers.
  • The TEHDAS2 project is finalizing technical specifications to harmonize secondary health data use across Europe.

Accelerating EHDS readiness across Europe

The European Health Data & Innovation Summit 2025, held on 30 January in Warsaw, Poland, gathered representatives from key EU institutions, the public sector, and industry to discuss innovation and challenges around EHDS implementation.

Experts cautioned that hospitals across the European Union risk falling behind in the mandatory EHDS rollout, which will transform how health data is accessed and used for both primary and secondary purposes. The regulation establishes Europeโ€™s first common health data space โ€” a cornerstone of the European Health Union โ€” with foundational requirements due soon and full compliance expected by 2028.

BC Platformsโ€™ role in the TEHDAS2 initiative

As part of the TEHDAS2 stakeholder forum, BC Platforms contributes to developing a universal set of guidelines and technical specifications for secondary health data use under EHDS. With our R&D center in Espoo, Finland, we actively support the projectโ€™s goal to harmonize how data is shared and analyzed securely across Europe.

Recent progress highlights include:

  • Finland and France lead EHDS implementation across member states.

  • The first set of TEHDAS2 guidelines has been released for public comment, with more expected before summer.

  • Major challenges remain around data digitalization, integration, and harmonization.

  • Many hospitals are still catching up with Health Data Access Body (HDAB) requirements and risk overload as data queries increase.

Given the short transition period, hospitals that delay EHDS preparation may face significant operational and compliance challenges
